- CAVD occurs in >25% individuals over 65 yo
- Overall prevalence of 2.5% for any valve disease
- Poor prognosis (heart failure; 50% will not survive more than 2 years after onset of symptoms; predicted survival of inoperable patients is lower than with metastatic cancers)
- Bicuspid aortic valve is the most common congenital cardiovascular defect
